Cough in Ayurveda

Ayurvedic medicine is based on the idea that there are three doshas (body types): Vata, Pitta and Kapha. All people have the qualities of each, but one is usually primary, one secondary and the third least prominent.

A cough is a sudden, often repetitive, protective reflex that helps clear the large breathing passages of fluids, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. The cough reflex has three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs as the glottis opens, usually with a distinctive sound.
